PRACTICAL HAIR TIPS AND HAIR PACKS

  1. If you do not wish to use shampoo all the time on your oiled hair, at times you could use plain ‘channa atta’ (gram flour). Apply it directly on your oiled hair. Now add as little water as possible and rub your hair all over. Wash off. Repeat the process adding little more water. You will be surprised that even if you have puts lots of oil the previous night, your hair will come out absolutely clean at the same time saving on expensive shampoos. You can mix amla, shikakai and areetha powders in equal proportion for washing hair. But take care to keep your eyes shut as even one drop of areetha suds can cause irritation and reddening of eyes.

  2. The ayurvedic system of medicine advocates that hair should never be washed with hot water, except in very cold climate you could use luke warm water but no soap or shampoo should be used on the hair. Then there is the other system, which tells you to wash your hair alternately with hot and cold water to strengthen the hair and the scalp. While each system seems right in its own way, use the method that suits your hair best.

  3. Occasionally give yourself a hot oil treatment, wrapping your head with a towel enveloped in hot steam.

  4. To a cup of strong black tea add a teaspoon of salt. Strain and apply on the roots leaving it for one hour. Wash off without shampooing.

  5. If baldness has started, apply fresh onion paste or egg yolks directly to the balding part. Some prefer to be ‘bald and beautiful".

  6. Strained tea leaves with lemon juice for the last rinse makes hair glossy and soft as also a teaspoon of honey to a mug of water.

  7. Beat an egg, squeeze the juice of one lime, add a little oil if your hair is not already oiled the previous night. Keep it for 30-40 minutes. Wash off with or without shampoo.

  8. Wish to highlight your long tresses? Then make a mixture of glycerine, sugar and lime. Apply on different sections of the hair to be highlighted and remain in sunlight for 20 minutes. Busy yourself for the next 20 minutes under shade. Wash off as usual.

  9. For hair lice, Naturopaths recommend a paste of garlic and camphor in lemon juice to be applied 30 minutes before bath, Of course, there are excellent medicines in the market too for killing lice. Neem oil or margosa applied on the scalp is also effective as ‘ neem’ is germicidal and can destroy the germs. After drying, use a small-toothed comb.

  10. Apply shampoo directly to your oiled hair without wetting. Cleanses better. This is only possible for the first rinse.

  11. This one’s for extremely oily hair. Whip some egg whites in your mixer and apply them to your hair. When dry, brush vigorously removing excess oil and dirt.. This leaves you hair clean, fluffy and shinning.

  12. If you wish to avoid the greasy look just apply 2 or 3 drops of oil on your scalp before retiring to bed every night and plait it at bed time. For some this accelerates hair gowth.
