SUCTION EVACUATION

This improvised method consists of a suction machine fitted with a cannula either plastic or metal available in various sizes. This is inserted into the uterus via the vagina and the products are sucked out.

Advantages

  • You don’t have to stay in the hospital for more than few hours.
  • Blood loss is minimal.

Drawbacks

The method is not suitable for bigger uterus i.e. more than 10 weeks as chance of retained products is more.

DILATATION AND EVACUATION

Advantages

As it can be done as an outdoor procedure, you can go home after the sedative effect is over.

Drawbacks

  • Chance of cervical injury is more.
  • Uterus should not be more than 6-8 weeks of pregnancy.

PROSTAGLANDINS

Considering the efficacy and safety of first trimester termination by mechanical means, prostaglandins, even where it is available, are not used because of its adverse side effects whether used transvaginally or intramuscularly.
