Suction Evacuation

WHAT IS MEANT BY SUCTION EVACUATION?

It is a means of MTP and entails removal of the fetus and accompanying tissue from the uterus through suction. It may also be used in cases of Missed or incomplete abortions.

DIAGNOSTIC TESTS

  • Pre-procedure: Pregnancy test; to confirm pregnancy and blood group.
  • Post-procedure: Laboratory examination of removed tissue.

Generally performed under Short General anesthesia and as a day care procedure.

DESCRIPTION OF OPERATION

  • A small plastic tube is passed through the vagina and cervix into the uterus. The tube is connected to a suction apparatus.
  • Gentle suction through the tube removes the uterine contents. You may feel cramps in the lower abdomen, nausea, sweating and faintness.
  • The tube is removed.

POSSIBLE COMPLICATIONS

  • Excessive bleeding.
  • Surgical-wound infection.
  • Perforation or infection of the uterus.

TREATMENT

SELF CARE

  • Use sanitary pads for bleeding, which may last for several days.
  • Avoid sexual relations for 1 week.
  • If you wish to take birth-control pills, begin taking them either on the night of the procedure or the next day. If you prefer an IUD it can be fitted during your next appointment.

MEDICATION

Your doctor may prescribe usual antibiotics and pain relievers and Stool softeners to prevent constipation.

ACTIVITY

Resume normal activities slowly the next day.

DIET

No special diet.

BE ON ALERT FOR

  • Vaginal bleeding that soaks more than 1 pad per hour.
  • Signs of infection: headache, muscle aches, dizziness or a general ill feeling and fever.
  • Abdominal pain or swelling.
