Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT)

DO WOMEN, WITH A HEALTHY UTERUS, RUN A RISK OF PREGNANCY?

Yes! They must take a good contraceptive cover, as HRT does not give sufficient protection.

WHEN, WHERE AND HOW, SHOULD HRT BE STARTED?

HRT can be started at any age if symptoms are due to estrogen deficiency. Most hospitals now have HRT clinics. One must go to a gynaecologist with interest and experience in HRT.

ONE MUST NEVER TAKE HRT WITHOUT A DOCTOR'S SUPERVISION

HRT can be administered on continuous or cyclical (3 weeks on; 1 week off) basis. Continuous administration is started on the first day of menstruation. It can be started anytime if menstruation has stopped.

Cyclical administration can be started any time if there has been no bleeding in last 2 months otherwiwise it has to be started on the 5th day of menstruation.
Progesterone is administered for last 10-12 days in women who have their uterus intact.

ANY OTHER PRECAUTIONS?

In surgeries where there is a chance of blood clot formation or prolonged immobilization is required HRT should be discontinued.
