SYMPTOMS IN MOTHER

  • Generally asymptomatic
  • Persists in the human host as latent infection in several glands.

EFFECTS ON FOETUS

  • Congenital abnormalities including mental retardation, deafness and microcephaly.
  • Haemolytic anaemia.
  • Subclinical infections in adults such as: hepatitis, pneumonia and cytomegalovirus.
  • Infectious mononucleosis.
