Is
HRT Different From the Contraceptive Pill? |
Yes. HRT uses "natural" oestrogens as
compared to "synthetic" oestrogens used in contraceptive pills, and is given in
small doses to mimic what was natural happening in the body.
|
Does HRT Delay the Menopause if Started Before the Natural Menopause? |
No, but it masks it, since it is often
designed to cause regular bleed like periods. If you start HRT before your natural periods have stopped,
this bleeding will continue after you have reached the menopause.
|
For How Long Does Doctor Prescribe HRT? |
Some women may need to be treated for only
a few months to get over their symptoms, but others may need HRT for a few years, so that when they stop
treatment their symptoms do not return. Some doctors prefer to continue treatment on a
long-term basis, to prevent the onset of other symptoms in later years. With your help
your doctor will decide what is best for you.

Are
There Any Side Effects of HRT? |
It produces very few side-effects. Minor
ones, such as breast tenderness may occur, but usually disappear after a month or two.
|
Are
There Any Risks From HRT? |
The evidence suggests that properly
supervised HRT carries negligible risk to your
health. Natural oestrogen is different from the stronger synthetic used in the
contraceptive pill. Women receiving combined HRT
will have less risk of getting cancer of the womb than if they were taking no HRT at all.
