The Low Salt Diet

SALT SHAKER

Never use salt-shaker to add extra salt to the foods on your plate. Added salt accounts for between 25 and 45 percent of total salt intake. If this is difficult try transferring the salt to a pepper-shaker and progressively block out all of the holes with tape. You could try using Low sodium salt, which contains 50 percent sodium chloride and 50 percent potassium chloride. (Salt substitutes containing potassium chloride or other chlorides may be helpful but can be dangerous for people with medical problems that affect the kidney function). Better, still make up a mixture of herbs and place them in a bowl on the table to sprinkle over food or serve on wedges of lemon to squeeze over the food.
