IS IT REALLY REQUIRED?

Almost every patient inquires: "Is this operation necessary?" and wants to know "What will happen if I don't get operated now?"
To understand this let us see the various categories under which different surgeries fall:

  1. EMERGENCY SURGERY - Conditions requiring immediate attention. The patient has to be taken directly to the hospital without delay. In this group we will place:
    • Fractured skull
    • Stabbings
    • Gunshot wounds
    • Acute intestinal obstruction
    • Ruptured ectopic pregnancy
    • Major bone fractures
    • Strangulated hernia
    • Foreign bodies in windpipe & foodpipe
    • Gangrene of toe or foot
    • Clot in major blood vessel
    • Acute Glaucoma
    • Acute Appendicitis
    • Severe eye injuries

  2. URGENT SURGERY - Conditions requiring prompt medical attention. The patient should arrange for hospital admission within 24-48 hours.
  3. ESSENTIAL SURGERY - Conditions which must be operated upon but which do not require immediate or prompt attention. The patient can arrange for hospital admission within weeks or months. In this group we will place
    • Cataracts
    • Sinus surgery
    • Spinal surgery
    • Tonsil operations
    • Repair of Heart valves & blood vessel defects
    • Fibroids of uterus
    • Prostate conditions without obstruction
    • Thyroid operations
    • Correction of bone deformities, Joint replacements

  4. ELECTIVE SURGERY - Where the patient can decide the time and place of surgery and can even delay for months together.
