ANTE NATAL CARE

Knee and elbow position
Image
  • Mother kneels knees about 12" apart.
  • She contracts the abdominals to support the baby’s weight.
  • The arms are folded on the floor and she rests her head on her arms.
  • Do not allow the back to hollow.

This position should be taken only for a few minutes to avoid dizziness due to increased blood flow to the brain and hyperventilation (increased rate of breathing).

This exercise is done to remove pressure from the pelvic brim and to temporarily reduce the loading of pelvic floor. This also decreases compressions of the sciatic nerves.

Another variation is swabbing the floor in prove kneeling to achieve this.
