IRRADIATION (NOT FOR TRYING @ HOME)

Irradiation (Nuclear radiation) kills bacteria without significantly changing the food items. Food sealed plastic bags and then irradiated, will become sterile and can be stored on a shelf without refrigeration. Another advantage is that, unlike canning, it does not significantly change the taste or texture of the food when irradiated.

BARC is advocating irradiation of food and has been tried successfully on Onions and Potatoes. People still do not mentally accept the concept that "nuclear radiation" can be harmless as well. http://www.howstuffworks.com/nuclear2.shtml
